64-gun ship "Augusta" caught fire during the battle for Fort Mifflin

PhillyHappened on this day at The Battle of Mud Island. This famous siege lasted for nearly a month and denied the British Navy free use of the Delaware River.

Fort Mifflin, a site near the Philadelphia International Airport, was laid siege upon by British troops and ships in early October, 1777 and lasted until November 15, 1777. Many of the estimated 450 soldiers  defending the fort were wounded or killed, those that survived ferried the dead and wounded back to the mainland before final withdrawal.
