Celebrating Philadelphia’s independent publishing and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) culture, the Monstera Collective: Art and Zine Fair will take place on Sunday, November 5, 2017 from 12PM to 5PM. at Fishtown’s own Colorspace Labs.

The Monstera Collective: Philadelphia Art + Zine Fair will be held on Sunday, November 5th. This one-day event will bring together artists, small presses, publishers, and a variety of vendors for a day filled with workshops, readings, and discussion. This event is free and open to the public and will feature artists’ books, zines, and crafts. Independent artists are invited to showcase, share, and sell their work, while cultivating their direct connection to the community through their participation in the offered workshops and discussion.

What’s a zine? Short for fanzines or magazines – zines are independent or self-published publications informed by the DIY ethos, usually hand-made and of a limited run. They come in a variety of formats and include both original and appropriated text and images. Topics covered are broad, including poetry, art, personal journals, politics and fan fiction.

We hope to further Monstera Collective’s mission beyond this one-day event by donating all proceeds to Philadelphia nonprofit Mighty Writers and towards Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief. Mighty Writers provides writing-focused out of school time programs in four city neighborhoods. Mighty Writers works to create a community of support for minority populations that are abundantly present in its programs, but largely lacking representation, recognition, or support on a national, institutional level through literacy-based programming.
