Energy saving tipsEnergy bills can be expensive, especially in the winter months. While we’ve been fortunate here in Philly to have a fairly mild winter so far, we still have at least six more weeks of winter ahead of us – at least according to Punxsutawney Phil, who saw his shadow on February 2. Check out the below tips for some quick and inexpensive ways to conserve energy and put more money back in your wallet.

  • Make sure heating outlets are not blocked by furniture or other objects.
  • Take shorter showers. Cutting your shower time in half can cut your water heating costs by as much as 33%!
  • Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances. Also, make sure you put your computer and monitor to sleep when you’re not using them.
  • When washing clothes or dishes, make sure you are only washing full loads. When drying clothes in the dryer, use the moisture-sensing setting, and be sure to clean the lint trap after each use.
  • Install a programmable thermostat. It can save you up to 15% on your heating bill.
  • Caulk or weather-strip doors and windows that may leak air.
  • Keep blinds and curtains open during the day to allow sunlight into your home, and closed at night to help insulate against heat loss.
  • If you have a fireplace, make sure it’s closed and the dampers are shut when you’re not using it.
  • Install a low flow shower head in your shower to save on hot water expenses.
  • Replace old windows with high performance, dual pane windows. These windows will keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler during the summer months.
