Gardening Club at Linvilla Orchard
Thursday, July 16, 23 and 30 at 10:00 a.m.
The Gardening Club meets at Linvilla Orchard every Thursday morning. Neither fees, nor homework are required, just friends coming together to dig deep into a common passion.
Miniature Rustic Container Garden Workshop
Saturday, July 18 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Learn how to make a small, long-lasting, rustic, decorative container garden using tiny plants and succulents. Perfect for your coffee table, apartment, or patio — you’ll be the talk of the town! The class is $45 per person and includes container, soil, plants, and fun accessories. Bring your own gloves, trowel, and spoons to dig with.
Make More Plants
Wednesday, July 22 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
The best time of year to propagate many trees and shrubs is midsummer. In this hands-on workshop, learn techniques for successfully rooting greenwood cuttings from master propagator Bruce Keyser, using plant material from the Barnes Arboretum living collections. Participants make their own sweatboxes, a key to successfully rooting the cuttings they take home. Fee includes all materials; participants should bring their own lunch.
Organizing a Summer Garden
Saturday, July 25 at 10:00 a.m.
This workshop will cover summer food, flowers, shrubs, trees, soil, fertilizers and pest control — everything to make summer garden more lush, and the fall garden more productive. Participants will take home supplies appropriate to the season. Bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes. The second half of this workshop will involve touring a local community garden. Participants will learn what it takes to put the community into a garden shared with others. This session will also cover real estate issues, organizing volunteers, designing a group garden, and finding resources.

Floral Fun at Longwood Gardens
Friday, August 7 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Cool off from the heat with this water design in a glass bowl featuring mid-to-late summer flowers such as zinnias and sunflowers. Each month, participants create a themed design, perfect for weekend entertaining, to give as a gift, or just to enjoy at home.
City Harvest Field Day: Cover Cropping and Preparing the Garden for Fall Crops
Wednesday, August 19 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
This class will cover basic material about fall fruit and vegetable crops and how to manage them using organic methods for pests, weeds and diseases. It will also include introduction to some basic supplies related to use of organic methods. This is a rain or shine event unless the weather is very poor.
Urban Ecology and Gardening Workshop
Saturday, August 29 from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
Learn about wild gardening and urban ecology while exploring the city in terms of the site’s geology, wildlife, hydrology, and history. In this sequence of four two-hour workshops, use all of your senses to experience and examine the unique feeling of place on this South Philadelphia site and reconsider urban gardens. Hands-on activities will take place.
