Living in Philadelphia is a unique experience, and not everyone is cut out for city living. City dwellers often struggle with the lack of space. You don’t see too many backyards with a shed or a garage to store a vehicle or tools. Some people think you can’t have the best of both worlds, but by renting a storage unit, you can enjoy the city life and have all the storage space you need.

Before you choose a storage facility, take the following features into consideration:

Security Options

Almost all facilities offer a keypad entry system at the main gate, to which you will be given a unique code for entry. You are responsible for providing your own lock on your storage unit.

Choose a facility that is completely fenced in and well lit, especially if you will be accessing your unit at night. Ensure you choose a facility with a 24-hour surveillance system.

Hours of Operation

You want to make sure your property is not only safe, but easily accessible as well. If you have a schedule that conflicts with a storage facility’s hours, then this may be more of a hassle than a convenience. Some facilities offer 24-hour access for a small fee, just be sure to know the hours prior to renting.

Storing Vehicles

Paying for a space in a parking garage is expensive, especially if you don’t use your car regularly. At some storage facilities, vehicles can be stored as long as it is registered, insured, and in working condition.

Insurance

Out of sight shouldn’t mean out of mind. Homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policies typically will not cover property damaged or stolen from a storage unit. However, most storage facilities offer additional insurance for a small, additional monthly fee.

Types of Units

There are generally 3 types of storage units -indoor, outdoor, and drive-up.  The property you intend to store will determine the type of unit that’s best for your needs.

Outdoor units are usually the least expensive, and are often used by people and businesses who frequently load and unload equipment and access the unit fairly often.

Drive-up units are generally the size of a one car garage, usually climate controlled, and are perfect for storing vehicles and appliances.

Indoor units are part of a building, and units are accessed on different floors via elevators. These units are more sheltered from the elements and are popular for storing electronics or artwork.
