Summer’s coming to a close, and as the air starts to cool and the leaves begin to change color, it’s the perfect time to prepare your home for the fall and winter. Home heating bills can be a real drain on your wallet; luckily, there are ways you can go green and save money at the same time.
- Air Seal and Insulate: According to the United States Department of Energy, most American homes are not properly sealed or insulated, wasting hundreds of dollars every year on heating costs. Where is the air coming from? The majority of air leaks occur in floors, walls, and ceilings. In addition to proper air sealing techniques, ENERGY STAR™ offers recommended levels of insulation for key areas in your home such as attics, basements and crawl spaces. Choose an air sealing and insulation provider that offers insulation made from post-consumer recycled content.
- Curtains and Drapes: Just like you have to wear heavier clothing in the winter, you should also dress your windows for the cooler weather. Install long drapery panels to help keep heat in and the cool air out. Keep your drapes and curtains open during the day to allow natural sunlight into your home, and closed at night to insulate against heat loss.
- Programmable Thermostats: Installing a programmable thermostat is a great way to save energy and money. There’s no sense (and cents) in heating your home while no one is around. Set your programmable thermostat for 65 to 67 degrees when you aren’t home and between 71 and 75 when you are so that your house remains cool while you’re away and warm when you’re at home.
