Uhuru Furniture Martin Luther King Jr. Day Event and Volunteer Project
An annual project of Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles and the African People’s Education and Defense Fund (APEDF), building economic self-reliance & carrying on the movement for African self-determination from the ‘60s to today!
The black community today faces homelessness, imprisonment, unemployment, poverty and early death at higher rates than in the 1960s.
Uhuru Furniture and the APEDF:
-Publicly stand for the human and civil rights of the African community
-Lead programs for economic development, job training, employment, education and health through the Uhuru Movement’s 50+ institutions of African self-determination.
-Push back gentrification by providing high quality, low-cost furniture, and housewares
-Support the Black Power Blueprint project, which is renovating abandoned buildings in St. Louis, MO.
10 – 11:30 am
-Watch historic films of MLK, Malcolm X, Civil Rights, and Black Power Movements
-Videos and presentations on the work of APEDF and the movement for African self-determination today
11:30 am – 2:30 pm
-Volunteer Project – outdoor flyering(so please DRESS WARMLY) to spread the word about Uhuru Furniture and APEDF
2:30 pm – 3 pm
-Pizza lunch for volunteers – Prizes
Drivers wanted for the day. If you have a car and are willing to transport others to door hanging sites, please let us know!
