In 2011, there were more than 14,600 car accidents reported in Pennsylvania that were caused by distracted drivers alone, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Philadelphia has a ban on cell phone usage while driving unless you’re using a hands-free device, such as Bluetooth, but there are still so many other situations that cause us to take our eyes off the road.

Follow these tips to keep yourself alert on the road:

  • Wake up earlier. Much of the time, distracted driving is a result of being in a rush and attempting to multi-task. Instead of counting on your morning car ride to eat your breakfast or apply your makeup, go to bed even just 15 to 30 minutes earlier each night and you will feel more rested in the morning and be able to get up more easily. Multi-tasking while driving is dangerous and not worth the cost of your life or the life of someone else.
  • Play with your GPS before you hit the road. Don’t wait until you’re already en route to punch your destination into your GPS. Familiarize yourself with your route before you leave the house so you don’t have to mess with your GPS or deal with the never ending “rerouting” alert.
  • When in doubt, pull over. If your eyes are starting to feel heavy, pull over to the side of the road or into a rest stop. Grab a coffee or try to get some shut eye for 15-20 minutes. You will feel more awake and alert on the roads.

You may think you are saving time by multi-tasking while driving, but you are putting yourself and others at risk. The next time you are in the car, keep yourself and others on the road in mind. Nothing is more important than your life. Whatever it is, it can wait.
