Did you know that the chocolate-chip cookie will be celebrating its eightieth birthday in 2018? I know that’s still a few years away, but cookie-a-holics like myself are already planning the celebration – an all-out cookie fest!
Here’s a little history lesson for those of you who don’t know much about cookies, or more specifically the chocolate-chip cookie – which is my personal favorite. A visionary named Ruth Wakefield, who ran the popular Toll House restaurant in Whitman, Massachusetts, invented something called the Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookie in the late nineteen-thirties. The dessert, which has gone through a number of transformations over the years, was originally created to compliment the dishes of ice cream Wakefield served to her customers. “We had been serving a thin butterscotch nut cookie with ice cream. Everybody seemed to love it, but I was trying to give them something different,” Wakefield told the Boston Herald-American in 1974.
And that she did. The cookie recipe made its first appearance in print in the 1938 edition of Wakefield’s “Tried and True” cookbook. Then in 1939 Wakefield gave Nestlé the right to use her cookie recipe and the Toll House name – the rest, as they say, is history!
