The portable food item was created by a man named John Montagu, who is also referred to as the 4th Earl of Sandwich. He was a British first lord of the Admiralty during the American Revolution. According to a number of sources, the idea for the sandwich came about because Montagu wanted to eat his meal without having to leave or be distracted from a 24-hour gambling event. To accomplish this he had his servants serve him his lunch-meat between two slices of bread, making his meal much easier to consume.

Now, the sandwich is one of the most common and popular meals we have. There are thousands of different varieties to choose from and millions of restaurants serve them every day. So, why not honor this great day by having a hamburger, cheesesteak, grilled cheese, BLT, tuna fish, peanut butter and jelly, Reuben, Monte Cristo, or all of the above!

Here are some of our favorite sandwiches in Philly:

Shackamaxon at Wedge and Fig

The Spiced Truffle at Di Bruno Bros

ALT (avocado, lettuce, tomato and mozzarella) at Jones

Any burger at Village Whiskey

All the sandwiches at Tommy DiNic’s
