On Saturday, November 8, the East Kensington Neighbors Association and New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) will be holding a FREE yard tree giveaway. That’s right – you could be a proud owner of a new tree, without having to spend a penny.
The event is part of the TreePhilly program – a new greening initiative led by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, in partnership with Wells Fargo and the Fairmount Park Conservancy that directly engages all Philadelphians in improving their communities by planting and maintaining trees and enabling others to do the same. The program’s new Community Yard Tree Giveaway Grants empower community groups to help restore Philly’s urban forest – starting in their own back yards.
Those who want to participate in Saturday’s event are invited to come to the NKCDC Garden Center at Frankford and Berks Street from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Participants will receive a free planting and care demonstration as well as a free bag of mulch from the Fairmount Park Organic Recycling Center. Trees must be planted in Philadelphia on private property, and must be planted in the ground rather than in the sidewalk or a container. Property owners will be responsible for watering and caring for their trees.
There is a limited species variety and no guarantee that you’ll received your first species choice. Participants are responsible for picking up and planting the tree themselves.
