Winter is beautiful in Philadelphia, with snow days being dreamed of by kids around the region.  If you are a grown up, however, it can get a bit messy.  Shoveling your car out from under feet of snow is a long honored adult tradition.  Here are some tips to make it just a little easier.

Shovel Smart

Start with a path to your drivers side door then around to the back to remove the snow around the exhaust pipe so that you can warm up the car and defrost the windshield without causing the exhaust to head back into the car.

Watch your Back

Snow can get heavy and cause some serious back pain.  Remember to lift with your legs and not your back.  Squat don’t drop!  You should also watch your back if you try and take someones spot!

Get Unstuck

If you finish digging and one or more wheels are stuck try putting down a piece of wood or cardboard in front of the tire to get traction. Don’t spin your wheels too much because that will dig you in even farther.

Deice Ice Baby

After the hard work of shoveling there is still the question of the windshield.  Make a salt water solution and spray it, sparingly since too much can damage the glass, on the windshield to melt the stuck on ice.  Another solution can be made with 2 parts rubbing alcohol and one part water.
