Lutheran Settlement House is pleased to announce the 11th annual Women of Courage Awards Ceremony. Women of Courage is Lutheran Settlement House’s annual fundraiser that celebrates the courageous spirit of remarkable women who have overcome obstacles and continue to advocate for the neediest in our community. Please join us in celebrating these women.

Established in 1902, Lutheran Settlement House serves over 7,000 of Philadelphia’s most vulnerable citizens including homeless mothers and children and domestic violence survivors. We also help unemployed community members prepare for the GED test and find jobs. Through our senior center, we run a food cupboard and intergenerational farm, which pairs seniors with teens to garden together and learn from each other.

At this year’s event, Lutheran Settlement House will recognize four former clients who have demonstrated courage in the face of adversity, and have found their way to self-sufficiency. We will also honor Karen Hudson, Program Leader of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Homeless Health Initiative (HHI), and Wendy Hamilton, General Manager of SugarHouse Casino.

Karen Hudson is a strong and passionate advocate dedicated to eliminating health disparities among children and families experiencing homelessness. HHI provides LSH’s homeless shelter, Jane Addams, Place with invaluable services, including medical and dental care visits, educational sessions, training seminars, and proceeds from fundraisers.

Wendy Hamilton is known both for her business savvy and strong support for the Philadelphia community. Wendy exemplifies female empowerment by leading an all-female leadership team at SugarHouse and by consciously hiring women with prior life challenges. Under her guidance, SugarHouse has worked closely with our employment program , and has financially supported LSH’s major capital renovation project.

This year, the event will be a luncheon, on Wednesday, May 18, 11:00am to 1:00pm at the Crystal Tea Room in the Wanamaker Building (100 E Penn Square).
