leshkoMost people have done the typical Philly tour that includes the art museum steps, Reading Terminal Market, and City Hall, but how many people can say they took a tour through miniature paper sculptures of buildings throughout the City of Brotherly Love – probably not many.

Now through Saturday, March 7 you can take the unique tour thanks to InLiquid – a nonprofit organization committed to creating opportunities and exposure for visual artists while serving as a free, online public hub for arts information in the Philadelphia area. They are featuring the work of six artists – including Drew Leshko, who creates intricate replicas of Philly buildings going through a transitional period – at the Painted Bride Art Center on Vine Street. The exhibition is part of InLiquid’s Art for Action program, which uses art exhibitions as a platform for dialog, community events, and social awareness efforts.

Leshko, a Philadelphia-based artist who lives in Kensington, carves, cuts, and layers varieties of paper and wood to create documentary studies of architecture from his neighborhood in an attempt to create a three dimensional archive of buildings that are in transitional periods. His work examines gentrification and history, how historical relevance is determined, and most importantly, what is worth preserving. He works from observation and photographs to recreate building facades from his neighborhood at a 1:12 scale – the standard dollhouse spec. The minute detail of his work includes city detritus such as dumpsters and pallets, which are commentary of the same ideas of what is worth preserving. Highlighting quick fixes and simple solutions, Leshko’s work begs the viewer to build their own ideas of why and when these changes had been made. Accumulations of typically overlooked details and minutiae like acid rain deposits and rust become beautiful adornments.

In addition to Leshko, the exhibition features artists Amze Emmons, Roberto Lugo, Mat Tomezsko, and Jesse Krimes. It’s open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. For more information, click here.
