This weekend the GORE-TEX® Philadelphia Marathon will attract more than 3,000 volunteers, 30,000 runners and 60,000 spectators.

Here are some recent stories that will help give Philly runners and avid marathoners inspiration as they prepare for the big weekend.

Homeless Use Philadelphia Marathon to Help Lift Their Lives
This weekend a half-dozen runners will go from homeless to running their first half-marathon when they hit the track during the GORE-TEX Philadelphia Marathon. “We use running to help those that are experiencing homelessness to move their lives forward,” Scott Crosin, Executive Director of Back on My Feet Philadelphia told CBS3. The non-profit partners with six local shelters to get the residents out running with volunteers three days a week at 5:30 in the morning. Click here to read the full story on CBS3’s website.

Running has long been a part of the Caruso family. Philadelphia Runner Participates In Marathon Despite Undergoing Chemo Treatments
Every year for the past five years, Dr. Michael Ross, a sports medicine physician at Rothman Institute, would participate in the 8k run, which is the day before the Philadelphia Marathon. Two months ago, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. CBS3 spoke with him while he was undergoing chemotherapy and he said he’ll be temporarily disconnecting his pump for the run this year. Click here to read the full story on CBS3’s website.

Wheelchair Bound Woman Prepares Her Hand Cycle for Marathon This Weekend
43-year-old Patricia Crebase – who was diagnosed with MS in 1995 and has been in a wheelchair for 10 years – will be competing in the Philadelphia Marathon this weekend. She did her first race in 2013, the Hope and Possibilities Race in New York City, which is a five-mile event that raises funds for Achilles International. The group is a non-profit that helps people with all types of abilities participate in mainstream sports, and Crebase is a co-founder of the Philadelphia chapter.
