This year, as the holidays are approaching, I find myself thinking about all the kids who will be headed to the same parade I attended as a child – Philadelphia’s Annual Thanksgiving Day Parade.

I can still remember how the day always started. My parents would be bundling my sister and I up in our warmest clothes. Then we’d pack the thermoses with hot chocolate and a bag with snacks – my parents were prepared for our complaints about being cold and hungry. After all the packing was done, they’d get us in the car and we would make our way to Fairmount – which is where we always watched the parade. The excitement I felt on our way downtown, anticipating all the characters I’d meet and floats I’d see, was overwhelming.

The 2014 parade, which is in its 95th year, may not have the exact same balloons they did from when I was a kid but from what I hear they will have some great ones – including staples like the Grinch and Clifford the Big Red Dog. In addition, they’ll have decorative floats in all shapes and sizes including the patriotic Dunkin’ Donuts opening float, the Campbell’s Thanksgiving Harvest float, Verizon’s colorful Under the Sea float and, of course, a special visit from Santa.

Oh and let’s not forget about the special appearances they always have. This year, Anna and Elsa from Disney on Ice presents Frozen will be there to greet guests. Joining them will be American Idol Season 12 winner Candice Glover, former N’Sync member Lance Bass, Miss America 2015 and many more.

The parade broadcast for this year begins at 8:30 a.m and ends at approximately 12 noon. The parade route can be found at http://dig.abclocal.go.com/wpvi/html/parade2014/index.html.

I wonder if all the kids attending this year’s parade will enjoy it as much as I did and if they’ll think about it as fondly as I do when they’re adults. I sure hope so!
