Philadelphia played a major role in the development of retail department stores. Years ago the city was filled with them with and most within walking distance to rail terminals and subway stations.

Now, the streets that used to be adorned with historic stores like Wanamaker’s, Gimbles, Lit Brothers, and Snellenburg’s are getting a new surge of retail energy with the opening of Century 21 and Nordstrom’s Rack this week.

That’s right – walls of discounted designer perfumes from Burberry to Marc Jacobs will now greet shoppers on Market Street at the Century 21 department store, which opens on October 23. And off-priced Nordstrom brands will be taking over 1700 Chestnut Street (where Daffy’s used to be) on October 24.
