As thermometers in our region start creeping up to heat wave status again, residents will be spending some time in backyard pools to cool off.

A swimming pool can be a great feature in a home; but it’s also a dangerous one. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 3,000 – 4,000 people drown every year. Drowning is preventable when the proper steps are taken.

Follow these pool safety tips to ensure safe splashing this summer:

–        Enroll your children in swimming lessons. It may sound obvious, but the best way to prevent accidental drowning is to be a strong swimmer. Local YMCAs offer classes for children as young as 6 months old. Visit www.philaymca.org to find the branch closest to you.

–        Secure the Fence. By law, every residential swimming pool in Philadelphia must have a fence; but a fence is useless if the gate isn’t latched. Ensure your fence is secure at all times, and that the latch is out of reach of small children.

–        Supervise swimmers. Don’t assume swimming lessons and floatation devices mean that your children are safe. Always supervise them when they’re swimming. If you have to run into the house for something, make the children get out of the pool until you return.

–        Learn CPR. No matter how closely you watch swimmers, sometimes accidents happen. When they do, you need to know CPR. The Red Cross offers lifesaving and water safety classes to help keep our community safe. Take a class individually or with a group. Learn more at www.redcrossphilly.org
