Boyz II Men, inducted into the Philadelphia Walk of Fame in 1996

If you happen to be walking down Broad Street this week (between Walnut and Spruce) you may notice an unfamiliar glow shining up at you. That glow is coming from the 121 newly shined bronze stars on Philadelphia’s very own Walk of Fame.

The stars, which just got an official cleaning on Tuesday, September 23 during an event called “Making the Stars Shine”, were established in 1986 to recognize many of the city’s entertainment standouts. People like Patti LaBelle, John Oates, Boyz II Men and Nina Simone – just to name a few.

The event provided a spotlight for The Avenue of the Arts’ upcoming fall schedule. It included an appearance by the Philly POPS, as well as Walk of Fame Honorees, Chubby Checker, Dee Dee Sharp, Charlie Gracie, Jerry Blavat and Jerry Ross, who joined the Philadelphia Music Alliance, Avenue of the Arts, Inc. and the I.A.T.S.E. Local Union 8 to clean and polish the bronze stars that line the street.

Philadelphia likely came up with the idea to lay these stars based on Hollywood’s internationally-recognized Walk of Fame, which was originally thought up in 1953 and proposed as a means to “maintain the glory of a community whose name means glamour and excitement in the four corners of the world.”
