Red Paw to the Rescue

Shauna during transport with volunteer Al

You may have seen our previous article introducing the Red Paw Emergency Relief Team, a non-profit organization that partners with the ARC, that aids animals that are displaced by disaster. The organization continuously offers a remarkable service to our community and the four legged family members of our neighbors and friends who are victims of disaster; but one story in particular stuck out this week.

There was a house fire in Northeast Philadelphia that left a family homeless and their miniature Maltese, Shauna, very sick. This was not just any accidental house fire. The perpetrators robbed the family of all their valuable possessions before setting fire to the home, a fire that left the home in ashes, killed their family cat, and left their dog very ill. Thanks to Red Paw volunteers Shauna, the family dog, was transported to the University of Pennsylvania Vet Hospital where she was treated. Her treatment included spending the night in an oxygen tank due to the smoke inhalation. This extensive treatment was made possible by the generous folks at Main Line Animal Rescue who covered all Shauna’s treatment expenses.
