WEEKI_FINAL_COVER-WEBSITE-2-700x700For the first time ever, the world famous Weeki Wachee Mermaids are swimming up the east coast for a limited-time engagement at Adventure Aquarium on the Camden Waterfront from November 1-9.  From what I’ve heard, aquarium guests will have the rare opportunity to see the enchanting mermaids perform synchronized swimming shows in the Ocean Realm Theater as sharks, sea turtles and stingrays glide past. How cool?!

The family-friendly program will also feature an out of water experience where guests have the chance to meet the Weeki Wachee Mermaids and pose for photos.

“We couldn’t be more excited to provide our guests with this truly unforgettable experience,” said Kevin Keppel, Executive Director. “Not only are the performances incredibly fun and engaging for our younger guests, but we also think that the older crowd will appreciate the athleticism and skill that goes into being a Weeki Wachee Mermaid.”

The mermaids usually stay close to home at the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, a freshwater spring north of Tampa, Florida, where swimming shows have been performed daily for almost 60 years. During the performances, the mermaids breathe underwater through special hoses hooked up to scuba tanks rather than the conventional scuba masks, giving the appearance of human fish.

The Weeki Wachee mermaid performances at Adventure Aquarium are scheduled during normal operating hours and the cost is included with general admission. This program is a collaborative effort with the Newport Aquarium, Adventure Aquarium’s sister aquarium located in Newport, Kentucky.

Philly Happening will be taking a trip there, so stay tuned for a recap on our experience!
