Old St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Philadelphia’s oldest Catholic church.

The early 1600’s played a vital role in Pennsylvania’s history. William Penn not only established the colony of Pennsylvania during that time, but also put into practice the “holy experiment” of religious tolerance – stating that people of all religions could worship freely.

Although there were already some Catholics in Philadelphia at the time, the number increased rapidly after Penn’s time in the area. Even with the new found freedom, Catholics still fought battles starting as early as the 1700 and 1800’s.

Now, decades later, the topic of Catholics in Philadelphia still takes center stage as a new 75-minute documentary titled Urban Trinity: The Story of Catholic Philadelphia debuts.

The documentary, which will be shown locally in three 25-minute segments on 6ABC this week, captures true and compelling stories from three centuries of Catholic leadership, institutions, and parishioners in Philadelphia. It shows how Catholics defended their faith, often against enormous pressures, and assimilated into American life and culture.

The series was completed to coincide with the 2015 World Meeting of Families here in Philadelphia – the world’s largest Catholic gathering of families. The theme of this year’s meeting is “Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive,” emphasizing the impact of the love and life of families on our society.
