Nutcracker_Graphic_368X512pixelsThe Philadelphia Nutcracker ballet, set in late 19th century Philadelphia, will be staged by the Philadelphia Dance Theatre on November 28th and 29th at the Kurtz Center for Performing Arts at William Penn Charter School in Germantown.

This distinctive production – featuring authentic period streetscapes, storefronts, and homes from Germantown, Mt. Airy, and Chestnut Hill as the setting for E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale – will be presented at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 28th and at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 29th.

Artistic director, Joy Delaney Capponi of Mt. Airy, draws inspiration from the rich history of the Northwest Philadelphia neighborhoods of Germantown, Mt. Airy, and Chestnut Hill. The graceful, historic neighborhoods will feel familiar to local audiences, and their charms and personality have been re-imagined to fit this seasonal ballet favorite.

The scenery and stage settings by Mt. Airy artist and educator, Christopher Fox, will replicate area locales from the late 1800s. The traditional party scene in Act I is set in the Thomas Mansion on Wissahickon Avenue, a Gothic style home built in 1869. The Land of the Snow is set upon “Tommy’s Hill,” the Northwest’s favorite sledding spot in Fairmount Park.

Act II sets highlight several Germantown Avenue merchants where Clara and her Prince explore the shops and sample sweets from local bakers and candy makers. Clara and the Prince make their way from Mt. Airy’s historic mansion, down Tommy’s Hill through Fairmont Park and onto Germantown Avenue where local bakers, toy makers, and purveyors prevail.
