Born and raised in Philadelphia or merely a tourist, chances are you know and have visited LOVE Park – officially known as John F. Kennedy Plaza. It’s one of the most well-known landmarks in our great city.

The park – designed by famed City Planner Edmond Bacon, father of actor Kevin Bacon – got its unofficial name from the LOVE sculpture, which Robert Indiana spent ten years working on. It was originally constructed over an underground parking garage in 1965 and was expanded in 1969 with the addition of curved granite steps and a fountain.

City officials have decided to give LOVE Park a total makeover, one that may cost close to $14 million, and are giving residents a chance to be part of the process by holding a public meeting on Wednesday, December 10 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Montgomery Auditorium at the Free Library of Philadelphia (Central Branch, 1901 Vine Street, Philadelphia).

Mark Focht, First Deputy Parks Commissioner, says ideas gathered tonight and in earlier public sessions will be summarized at a meeting next month.

If you’re unable to attend the meeting, but still want to be part of the process you can share your ideas via Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram using #newlovepark. Or email your ideas to praxis@design.upenn.edu.
