The Mural Arts Program has been “Painting a Health City” since 1984 when Jane Golden was recruited by Mayor Wilson Goode to combat the graffiti problem in Philadelphia. Golden’s passion and creativity blossomed into a social empowerment agency that has produced over 3,000 murals since its founding nearly 30 years ago.

The Mural Arts program partnered with the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services to create the Porch Light Program to connect community members with behavioral health & wellness services in a groundbreaking effort of public art. They have produced 17 large scale murals throughout the city helping to breakdown the stigma of mental health and substance use in communities.
