Local Lovebirds: Carl & Arlyn

 Love at First Sight

This local love story all began 39 years ago and is truly a tale of love at first sight. Carl and Arlyn have a fairytale romance that will surely sweep you off your feet just listening to Carl describe how they met when he moved into his first apartment in Center City, as he describes below:

I hadn’t received the mailbox key so I went to the office the next day to ask for it. In the same breath, I said, “Who is the girl over there?” I motioned to the dark-haired beauty who was sitting at the typewriter in the inner office.

“Oh, you want to know about her too?” the lady smiled.

“Yes….yes, I do.” I hoped she wasn’t married.

“She’s my niece. She is working as a rental agent this summer. Do you want to meet her?”

“Could I? That would be great!” My heart pounded out of control. I swallowed a suddenly dry throat as my tongue struggled to push the words out. Suddenly I was as nervous as a cat and didn’t know why. Had she called my bluff? Was I really interested, or just afraid she wouldn’t be as interested in me as I was in her? I don’t know what was going on but I went for it.

“Just a moment, I’ll go and get her,” she sweetened as she walked away. I watched as she bent over the girl’s shoulder to whisper my request. She flashed a brief but penetrating look my way and then rose from her chair and came over to be introduced. I was charged with electricity as we met.

“Hi.”

“Hi,” she smiled cautiously.

“I just moved in to the building.” Growing more courageous, I added, “Can you talk for a few minutes?”

“Sure, why not?” she relaxed.

We stood outside the elevator talking for nearly an hour.

“Call me sometime,” she offered as she left to go home.

I gave her a quick kiss on the cheek. Holding her hand, I assured, “You will hear from me….very soon!” I would have been content to spend the rest of my life talking with her right there but our lives had to move forward.

I reluctantly caught the elevator upstairs to my new home. When I got to my apartment I felt dazed—like I’d been whacked over the head. I was spinning with excitement, my breathing was erratic, and my heart was fluttering with a wild wave I’d never felt in my life. I had taken a deep plunge head over heels in love. I could not function for the rest of the day, and nothing else mattered to me. Every time I thought about her, my heart raced frantically. And think about her I did, during every waking moment. I was positively out of control, obsessed with this incredibly beautiful girl who had just stepped in my life and taken my heart.

It didn’t occur to me until the next day that I didn’t get her phone number. A frantic search of all the Riebers in the telephone book proved futile. I would have to wait out the weekend and hope to see her Monday after work. That weekend may have been a month for it seemed never to pass. I counted the hours, the minutes, and even the seconds as they swept past the numerals on my watch. It was torture.

After work on Monday I raced home hoping she’d be there. Fortunately, she realized that she’d forgotten to tell me she lived with her Grandparents whose name was different from that of her own. Knowing I would never find her in the phone book, she hung around on Monday until I got home.

“Oh, My God! Am I ever grateful to see you?” I wrapped her in my arms and held her as a new found treasure. “I was going out of my mind. I looked for you in every phone book and…” she covered my lips with hers.”

Today Carl and Arlyn are still very happily married and planning their 40th Anniversary celebration. When you hear Carl describe the love they share and their relationship, you can’t help but smile and feel the weightless happy feeling as if what you’re hearing is a dream. Like many sweeping romances, Carl and Arlyn met unexpectedly, (as Carl describes in detail above)  he told Philly Happening, “Some things are just meant to be.”

PH asked what’s the secret to a successful marriage?Carl shared, “Our relationship and marriage has always worked well as we have both always put the other first. Easily done as our love and dedication for one another is always paramount above all else.”

Happily Ever After

PH also asked, how do you stay so in love after 39 years? “She is my soul mate, the love of my life, my other half, my partner always. I cannot fathom life without her. She completes me; trite as that may sound, but oh so true. Our greatest pleasure is of giving and supporting each other. We share the identical values in life and are on one path of ethics. Our philosophies have paired well from day one and our goals could have been scripted by the same mind. Our non-verbal communication is uncanny as we can hear each others thoughts and intuitively understand,” Carl gushes.

PH wants to know if there is anything you would change? “The only complaint that we both have is that the time has flown by at warp speed. With something as preciously delicious as our love, we want to savor it, and we do, but it just measures too quickly like the grains of sand pushed away by the onshore breezes.”

Wishing Carl & Arlyn a wonderful 40th wedding anniversary and thanking them for showing us all that true love not only exists but can be everlasting too.
