Local celebrities are gearing up to shake their grove thing on April 22, 2012 to raise funds and awareness about Sickle Cell Disease at the Dancing With The Philadelphia Stars performance, at the Crystal Tea Room in Philadelphia. Local celebrities such as, Marissa Magnatta of the Preston & Steve morning show on WMMR, Kharisma McIlwaine of CW Philly, Councilwoman Marian Tasco and other terrific local personalities will be perofrming centerstage! To see a full list of everyone who is participating visit the DWTPS website.

All participants have been working very hard over at Society Hill Dance Academy to master their dances and prep for an evening of spectacular performances. Philly Happening recently had the opportunity to speak with participant, Julie Dorenbos, co-owner of Skin Palette and wife of Philadelphia Eagle Jon Dorenbos.

[box] PH: How did you become involved with DWTPS and Sickle Cell Awareness?

JD: I was approached about participating and I am always happy to help any charity in Philadelphia and give a helping hand. However, the more I learned about Sickle Cell Disease and the astonishing number of those affected by it, I knew I wanted to help and I am really happy to be a part of this event.

PH: Is this the first time you’ve participated in an event like this?

JD: Yes. I have participated in charity work before, but I am not a dancer and have never done something like this. My good friend, Kendra Wilkerson of Dancing With the Star’s (the ABC TV series) has been great. Julie continued to share with us that close friend and Dancing with the Stars alumni, Kendra Wilkerson, has been giving her pointers and advice on mastering the rumba, her dance for the competition on April 22nd. Julie has a slight advantage above other the contestants, as she attended an actual taping of the hit ABC TV series Dancing With The Stars to see Kendra compete in 2011.

The dance floor will be burning up with dances such as the Foxtrot, the Rumba, the Argentine Tango, and other fancy footed routines. Each participant will perform, with their professional dance partner (of Society Hill Dance Academy), a two minute dance for a panel of judges for the bragging rights of being crowned the champion of the 2012 Dancing with the Philadelphia Stars. Participants also dance off knowing they assisted in raising funds for an often forgotten disease, Sickle Cell Disease. Monies raised will assist with educational programs and other services for this genetic disease, which affects 1 in every 500 African Americans.
