IMG_2873If you live in Philadelphia than it’s safe to say that you’ve experienced a spring breeze filled with tiny pink flower petals that come from the many cherry blossom trees that bloom when the weather starts to turn.  Did you know those trees have quite a history?

1,600 sakura (Japanese flowering cherry trees) were originally a gift from Japan to Philadelphia in 1926.  After that, the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia planted 1,000 Cherry trees in Fairmont Park.

In 1998 the Cherry Blossom Festival began and went from being one day to honor the planting of these trees and the growing Philadelphian interested in Japan to a festival that lasts many days and is filled with events celebrating Japanese culture and food.
