In celebration of National Hot Dog Month (July), the South Street Head House District presents the Dog Days of Summer. For a whole week this July the SSHD will celebrate with tasty events spotlighting america’s favorite griller-the Hot Dog. There couldn’t be a more appropriate section of Philadelphia to offer such a hot diggity dog of an event, as South Street is rich with hot dog related history. In 1895 Levis Hot Dogs opened on South 6th Street by Abe Levis, an immigrant of Lithuania who opened the shop with his young newlywed, Anna Solo. Levis has been a community meeting place and favorite eatery for more than 100 years rich with Philadelphia history.
The Dog Days of Summer celebration begins July 18th with the lighting of the historic Levis Hot Dogs sign and end July 23rd. All week district businesses will offer hot dog specials and much more!

July 18th
Opening event! Lighting of the historic Levis’ Sign at 517 S. 4th Street at 6pm
July 19th
Hot Dog Happy Hour at Supper & Brauhaus Schmitz from 5-7pm
July 20th
Hot Dog Art Opening featuring Hawk Krall at Hot Diggity at 630 South Street
Hawk Krall is one of Philadelphia’s leading illustrators and one of the nation’s foremost hot dog experts. Hawk has illustrated for Lucky Peach Magazine, Philadelphia Weekly, and many other publications in addition to his hot dog illustrations, many of which garner the walls of Hot Diggity.
July 21st
Chill by the Grill at the Twisted Tail at 509 S. 2nd Street – 3-7pm
Grilled hot dogs and refreshments (beer & homemade lemonade) served outside of the Twisted Tail with live music
July 22nd
Dog Days of Summer Block Party! 600 block of South Street from 12-5pm
