Winter hasn’t made much of an appearance upon the region yet, but predictions of precipitation in the coming days and weeks are evident. Although it may only be rain in the forecast this week, you never know what Mother Nature may deliver- Remember October??

Of course we’re all dreaming of a white Christmas, but snow fall anytime of the year is just as beautiful as it is a pain in arse. Let’s be honest, snow accumulation within a city such as Philadelphia, is a total nightmare. Public transit is often delayed or cancelled, narrow city streets are impassable, streets cannot be plowed effectively due to parked cars, schools are easily closed and the list of headaches continues.

Therefore, Philly Happening started a convenient list of snow removal tips to make your season sweeter. If you prepare before the first major snowfall of the season you will be much happier and less inconvenienced, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of a winter wonderland.

[box] Supplies to keep on hand:

-Shovel: purchase a shovel that is an appropriate length for your height; as well as reinforced by metal or other heavier material than just plastic

-Ice Melt: Ice melt or salting compounds are terrific for stairways and sidewalks, especially in the morning when temperatures have dropped overnight causing widespread freezing. Also ideal for those bad ice storms our region occasionally face.

-Winter Apparel: Make sure you have a warm, preferably water proof winter coat, insulated gloves and knit hat to keep warm and prevent frostbite, as well as heavy socks.

-Proper footwear: Investing in rubberized or waterproof boots will keep your feet warm and free from frostbite or numbing.

-Candles, matches, lighters, oil lamps: Occasionally with heavy snow fall or ice formation you will lose power. Never leave an open flame unattended

-Broom/Ice scrapers: For those with vehicles remember to clean your vehicle off completely. Blowing snow and ice chunks can cause road hazards and compromise others safety on the roads. It’s also wise to keep windshield washer fluid/de-icer filled [/box]

You can also avoid one of many injuries, and even death, that hundreds of people experience each year while cleaning up after a big storm by remembering these important health and safety tips. Please remember to check on elderly neighbors or those with special needs as well, and lend a helping hand to those less physically able to shovel.

[box] Remember: Safety First!

1. If you have a heart condition of any kind it is recommended that you do not remove snow on your own. Shoveling is a very strenuous and physical activity.

2. If you see any down wires, call your utility company immediately. You never know if they are live.

3. Watch for slippery surfaces and black ice, especially on inclines, stairways and streets.

4. Push heavy snow rather than lifting it, your back will thank you. If you are required to lift, use your legs not your back.

5. If operating a snow blower follow all manufacturer instructions carefully. Never place your hand inside the blower to clear snow, and never touch the motor.[/box]
