For kids, the beginning of the school year means reuniting with friends, going to school dances, and whining about homework. For parents, it’s time to start worrying about what their children are bringing home from school. The incidence of head lice peaks right after school starts, especially among younger children, since this age group tends to play closely together.

Before your kids go back to school, check out these lice tips:

How to Prevent Lice:

  • Don’t share hairbrushes, combs, hair ties, headbands – even in your own house. Each person should have his/her own hair brush.
  • Don’t share coats, jackets, hoodies, or towels. Don’t share costumes or dress up clothing at school. Don’t let children share hats or helmets.
  • Avoid head-to-head contact during activities.
  • Clean, vacuum and sanitize any surfaces that come into contact with someone’s head, such as yoga mats and furniture.

How to Detect Lice:

  • Visual Check
    • Check clean, dry hair in sunlight or bright indoor light.
    • In ¼-inch sections starting from the scalp, inspect the hair.
    • Look for tiny, unmovable, teardrop-shaped nits, varying from cream to brown in color.
  • Combing Check
    • Check damp or towel-dried hair that is free of tangles.
    • Gently scrape the nit comb, dragging it from the scalp all the way to the end of the hair. Comb in four directions.
    • Wipe the nit comb on a paper towel after ever few strokes.

If you find even one nit, tell your child’s school, as well as friends and family. Everyone should check or get checked every few days for three weeks.
