With prom just a couple of months away, you and your high school junior or senior have probably started the preparations for the big night. While it’s certainly an exciting time, prom comes with a large price tag. Between the dress, shoes, limo rental, flowers, tickets, pictures, and hair & makeup, it can easily cost more than $800. Below are some ideas for how to have a memorable, exciting night while still being cost-effective:

Dress: Prom dresses are usually the most expensive piece of the puzzle. However, most girls only wear their dress once, and then it collects dust in a closet somewhere. If your daughter has an older sister, cousin, friend, etc., she might be able to borrow a gently used dress that looks brand new. Another option is to shop out of season. After prom season is over, dresses get drastically marked down to make room for next year’s inventory. Shop after this year’s prom for prom 2012, and you’ll be able to buy a fabulous dress for half the price.

Limo: Splitting the limo with other friends is a great way to cut costs. Make sure you shop around– don’t just go with the first company you research. Book it as far in advance to get the best price, as prices tend to go up as prom inches closer.

Flowers: Instead of paying a florist to create your corsage, make your own. Buy flowers at the grocery store, and experiment well in advance to get your technique down pat. If you’re not quite that crafty, try buying a pin-on corsage instead of a wrist corsage. Wrist corsages tend to cost a bit more, and you can easily attach your own ribbon to a pin-on corsage to tie it onto your wrist.

Hair & Make-Up: Avoid high end salons, who can charge more than $100 for an up-do. Opt for a cosmetology school, like Empire Beauty School, with locations throughout Philadelphia, Bucks, and Montgomery counties.  Empire Beauty School charges just $20 for a special occasion up-do, done by a senior student under the supervision of a licensed educator. You can even throw in a spa manicure and pedicure for just $24, and a make-up application costs just $10.

Prom is a big deal, but it doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. Set a budget, and talk to your daughter or son about ways you can save money. Encourage them to come up with some ideas of their own, as well. This way, you’re helping them to be responsible with money and encouraging them to be creative.
