US postage rates on the rise

It seems like it was just a few months ago that the cost of postage went up, but actually First Class stamps haven’t seen an increase since 2009. On January 22, 2012 the price of many United States Postal Service products and services will increase in price, fortunately there is a law that caps postage rate increases by 2.1 percent.

First class stamps will increase by one cent, from 44 cents to 45 cents. If you have Forever stamps, commonly a picture of the Liberty Bell or Statue of Liberty, you’re safe as Forever stamps are good for, well, ever. If you have any other stamps, such as the popular seasonal stamps, historical figures or Pixar stamps (to name a few) you will want to sign, seal, and mail that letter before January 22nd. Should you have an abundance of 44cents stamps you may purchase one cent stamps to compensate for the rate increase.

Other USPS service will increase by up to 2.1 percent as well, such as the following:

Postcard stamps                                                         3 cent increase to 32 cents

Letters to Canada or Mexico (up to 1oz)                     5 cent increase to 85 cents

Letters to other international destinations                7 cent increase to $1.05

Some good news regarding the 2012 changes is that delivery confirmation will now be free on many parcel products as the United State Postal Service strives to make tracking parcel as an important component, especially with commercial services. There will also be a new 3 month option for PO Box rentals for those in need for a short term PO Box address.
