Star Jones did it! You can too!

As people become increasingly aware of the weight loss and the other health benefits associated with bariatric surgery, one aspect can be overlooked: the risk to gain the weight back after surgery.

“Weight regain after bariatric surgery is a common issue that patients face long term,” says Mercy Bariatrics Director Prashanth Ramachandra, MD. “One must remember that bariatric surgery is just a tool to aid in weight loss. Patient participation is equally important to help with their weight loss process.”

According to Dr. Ramachandra, letting good nutrition and exercise habits slip can lead to weight gain, but issues with the surgical procedure can also be factors. These issues could include natural changes in your stomach that allow you to eat more and absorb more calories.

“When patients start regaining weight due to an issue the procedure they’ve had, most of the time, they experience no symptoms other than weight regain,” he says. “These issues can be reversed to help patients get back on track with their weight loss regimen.”

Dr. Ramachandra and the Mercy Bariatrics team are hosting free seminars to address weight gain after bariatric surgery. The seminars are open to the community, including individuals who previously had surgery through other bariatrics programs.
