One of Philadelphia’s favorite cheesesteak joints is changing their name.

“It is very important to me, my family and the entire staff that we no longer inadvertently alienate anyone in the Philly community. We are very excited to move forward under the new name, Joe’s Steaks + Soda Shop.”

cheesesteakChink’s Cheesesteaks has been a Philadelphia tradition since 1949, serving up milkshakes, egg creams, and handcrafted sodas to compliment their hand sliced rib eye steak sandwiches. The name was never meant to mimic a racial slur, it was actually the nickname of the original owner and when current owner Joe Groh too over the business in 1997 patrons threatened to never return if he changed the name. Today Groh wants to make way for the legacy he and his own son, Patrick, wish to leave behind and they want to make sure no Philadelphia feels alienated from their shop. All patrons are welcome and they don’t want anyone to be offended over a once childhood nickname that became known as Chink’s Cheesesteaks, a Philadelphia landmark.

Chink’s was crowned the Best Cheesesteak in the 2013 Happening List competition. Proving once again that the locals know the best place for a steak sandwich. The official name change will take place April 1, 2013.
