Ben Franklin

November 13, 1749

“The first American” best known as a printer and signer of the Declaration of Independence was also at the forefront of many Philly firsts prior to 1776.

What is considered by many to be the first American Academy, The Academy and College of Philadelphia, later the University of Pennsylvania was founded by Franklin. Having drawn up the constitution for the academy, Ben Franklin was appointed president on November 13, 1749.
