Wanamaker Building c. 1911

December 30, 1911

President William Howard Taft dedicated the 12 story Wanamaker building in 1911, built by Mr. John Wanamaker. Wanamaker’s was the first department store conceptualized in Philadelphia back in 1866, with the expansion and construction to the 12 story building in 1911, which is the home of Philadelphia’s Macy’s department store today. A city landmark and tourist attraction, the Wanamaker building may be most known for its gorgeous pipe organ consisting of 28,500 pipes. If you’re lucky you’ll be graced with the magical sound of this vintage pipe organ during one of its two daily concerts which are performed Monday through Saturday.

The Wanamaker building is located at 1300 Market Street, Philadelphia.

Do you have a found memory of hearing or seeing this beautiful pipe organ?
