Typical steamboat of the 1800’s

On this day in Philadelphia history, the new steamboat Baltimore was launched at the Vaughan & Bowers shipyard in Kensington. The shipyard was that of steamboat builders John Vaughan and Samuel Bowers. Steamboats were an intregual part of transportation system in the early 1800’s, transporting goods along the Delaware River from Baltimore to Philadelphia as well as other local ports. Although information is limited on the Baltimore and Philadelphia steamboat company, one can easily find old stock certificates online such as this:
