2012 Memorial Day Events

This Memorial Day our great city has a few great family friendly activies planned, at some of the nation’s most historical landmarks, located right in our backyard. MEMORIAL DAY AT THE NATIONAL CONSTITUTION CENTER

Saturday, May 26, 2011 – Monday, May 28, 2012, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

This Memorial Day weekend, the National Constitution Center will celebrate the people and events of our nation’s past. The American flag will be raised each morning during a special ceremony at the Center. Guests are invited to join in this event to learn proper flag raising protocol.

During the special program “Memorials: How a Nation Remembers” at 10 am, Noon and 2 pm, visitors will learn about monuments across the country, including Little Bighorn, the U.S.S. Arizona, and the Lincoln Memorial.

From 10 am-3 pm, visitors can sing their favorite American anthems during Patriotic Karaoke, and create memorial poppy pins, American flags, and American star memorial wreathes at activity tables. For information call 215-409-6700; Free with museum admission.

 

ONCE UPON A NATION STORYTELLING BENCHES

Saturday, May 26 – Sunday, May 27, 2012 11 am – 4 pm

Wherever you elect to start you storytelling journey, be sure to ask your storyteller for a flag. Kids collect one star from each bench they visit; flags complete with stars may be presented for a coupon book and fun prizes at the Historic Philadelphia Center (6th & Chestnut streets) or at Franklin Square (6th and Race Streets.) FREE

8. Betsy Ross House, 3rd & Arch Streets

9. Historic Philadelphia Center, home of the Liberty 360 Show in the PECO Theater, 6th & Chestnut Streets

LIBERTY 360 SHOW IN THE PECO THEATER

Saturday, May 26 – Monday, May 28, 2012 10am-8pm, shows every 20 minutes

Why is the Liberty Bell important to us?  What makes America special?  Find out in Lights of Liberty’s newest multimedia production that takes you on a journey through the symbols of freedom.  Benjamin  Franklin hosts an inspirational 3-D show unlike  anything that has ever been seen before.   The 15-minute experience surrounds the audience in the 360-degree  state-of-the-art PECO Theater.

MEMORIAL DAY CELEBRATION AT FRANKLIN SQUARE

Saturday, MAy 26 – Monday, May 28, 2012 12pm-3pm

Kick off the summer season with free activities for the whole family. Fun family entertainment and a beautiful park are just steps away from the Liberty Bell, in one of William Penn’s original five squares. FREE. For infomation call 215-629-5801.

 

LONGWOOD GARDENS

Saturday, May 26, 2012 9:15pm

Venture a short distance outside Philadelphia and enjoy a spectacular fireworks and fountain display at Longwood Gardens. Glittering fireworks and colorful fountains light up the night sky and dance to exciting music. On May 26th Swan Lake will be the featured score,  Tchaikovsky’s most beloved music from what is probably the most famous ballet of all, about a princess transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer.
