Have you made your resolution?

As 2011 comes barreling to a close, we begin the process of making a New Year’s resolution. To lose weight, to find a new job, quit smoking, to learn a new hobby, basically hoping to shed all the negative or undesired clutter and bad habits from our lives and begin the year with a fresh start, a rejuvenated sense of motivation, a focus and goal. Unfortunately by this time next year only a lonely 10 percent of you statistically have kept your resolutions and the other 90 percent of have failed…again. Why is it so darn difficult to stick to our guns and maintain the momentum and motivation we so proudly pledge on January 1st? There is a recipe of success when it comes to making a new year’s resolution, and by following these simple tips Philly Happening will help you succeed, making 2012 victorious in the resolution department.

#1 Plan ahead

Don’t procrastinate in making your resolution. Figure out what your resolution will be before New Year’s Eve. Consider making a pro’s and con’s list, an outline…a general plan and idea of how you will ultimately achieve success will help you chose the right resolution for you.

#2 Set an attainable goal

Be realistic in what you wish to accomplish. Don’t sent unrealistic goals, especially for short, specific time frames. Although many psychologists recommend setting a time frame to accomplish your goal, it’s important to be realistic with your expectations. Making unrealistic expectations will only cause you to become frustrated and discourages, leading to failure early on.

#3 Check yourself

Periodically check yourself. See if you are accomplishing your goal, if you have been following your plan. For example, if your New Year’s resolution is to quit smoking, remember to stop once a month or so and ask yourself, how many times have a succeeded and not given into the urge to light up? When you realize that you have succeeded, even if in small doses, it will make you feel better about yourself and reinforce the fact that you can do it, you can succeed.

#4 Reward Yourself

Every success deserves a celebration, so don’t miss those milestone victories. Remember resolutions are about behavior modification, being aware of your behaviors and rewarding yourself when you succeed. Rewarding yourself will motivate you; in turn promote more success in keeping your resolution.

#5 Track your progress

There is no feeling like reaching the finish line and seeing a video highlight of your performance. Resolutions are no different. Track your progress throughout the year, you will feel so good when you look back and see how many times you triumphed an old habit or learned more about a new hobby, etc.

Fun Fact: More resolutions are made to start a new habit, then stop an old habit
