Alanna Ralph

This Friday, January 11th come out to FrameWorks Studio and Gallery for the opportunity to view the inspired and talented photography of local artist Alanna Ralph. We recently had the opportunity to talk to Alanna about her work and what inspires her to capture the amazing and emotional images she will be exhibiting at Open Aperture from January 7th – February 24th, 2013.

PH: Would you say that photography is more of a hobby than a profession for you?

AR: Photography started off as a hobby, I was always been passionate about photography and I loved to just take photos of what I thought was beautiful or different, things that I loved to see. It wasn’t until I was contacted by a travel magazine who wanted to use photos Ive taken while on vacation in Belize. It was that little recognition that made me think, Okay, people actually like my work enough to publish it. From there I’ve wanted to learn more and more about the camera and techniques which lead into a part time profession. I’m lucky to work doing things I am passionate about.

PH: Your work can be very dark and emotional, a talent that not all photographers posses. Can you tell us a little about your creative process? What inspires your images or themes?

AR: My inspiration comes from people, emotions, life, hardships, etc. I am drawn to people who have a story; maybe by the sadness in their eyes, or something deep within etched on their faces. When I meet people and we start talking, a story always comes forth and I get a “Vision” – an image I want to shoot. The vision represents them, their pain, or issues even though it may not be so obvious. Now people can see the pain that my subject feels, Almost like photo therapy. Its out there for the world to see and almost everyone can relate to at least one of my darker photos. I also shoot beautiful, happy, empowering photos, but it’s just something that happens when I meet people. I get that “Vision” !

PH: What is your favorite type of subject to shoot and why?

AR: I love to shoot dark, dilapidated, broken down, weathered places. Like abandoned factories, warehouses, churches, etc. It so surreal to find a place frozen in time and quiet while the world out side is loud and busy. I like to find the small simple things that people overlook and make that my focus. Like a tiny rusted gear on a machine, or broken chair siting in the sun’s ray. I also love shooting women, showing them how beautiful they look through my lens, even though they may not feel that way. It’s empowering to them, to see themselves in a different way. I always hear, “oh my god, I love my photos! I look really good.” I laugh and just show them they were always beautiful, they needed someone to show them. That’s an amazing feeling to help women feel great about themselves!

PH: Indoor or Outdoor shoots, what do you prefer (and why)?

AR: I love outdoor shoots, I am great with natural light, I love clouds, stormy skies. I love sunsets, especially when they are super orange, red and pink, or the rays peak out of the clouds. I love nature and use wild untamed places a lot in my shoots. I also love the odd places like torn down buildings and will use nudes in those locations a lot. Something special about beautiful delicate skin, against rough jagged rocks or machinery. I get inspired almost anywhere. When the inspiration strikes I will do almost anything to get the shot!

PH: Where or How can our readers purchase your work and hire you?

AR: I have two ways to reach me according to the work you are interested in. My fine art prints and darker images can be purchased here www.AlannaRalph.net, and for booking or more project ideas visit www.BlushPinups.com. I can be reached on the phone at 215.634.1606
