On Wednesday, October 3 at 7 a.m. Federal Donuts will officially open their second location right here in Center City at 1632 Sansom Street. Federal Donuts is the insanely popular coffee, donuts-and-fried-chicken shop which opened almost one year ago in South Philly. The new location will offer donut and chicken lovers totally new flavors from the original location at 1219 South Second Street, along with exceptional fresh brewed coffee. Federal Donuts will serve seven days a week from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. or until the chicken runs out.

“When we opened our first Federal Donuts last October in South Philly, we had no idea that people would react so well to the combo of donuts and fried chicken. Twenty-five thousand orders of chicken later, we decided there was demand for a second location,” says co-owner/chef Michael Solomonov whose scrumptious cake donuts and crunchy, juicy fried chickens became an instant hit and garnered local and national praise including a glowing review from the New York Times, which noted “These were world-class doughnuts” and from Philadelphia Police officers who sampled the donuts for a Daily News article which said, “Each variety was an unmitigated success, with words like “tremendous” murmured between doughnut bites.”

Federal Donuts will open every day at 7 a.m. serving custom-blended coffee and fresh cake donuts. Donuts can be ordered two ways: Hot Fresh ($1.25) pulled from the fryer to order and rolled in one of several custom seasoned sugar blends, such as Turkish Mocha, Strawberry-Fennel and Vanilla Spice; and Fancy ($2.), topped with decadent flavors such as Mint Chocolate Cookie, Lemon Bar, Maple Bacon, Green Tea-Sesame, Spicy PB&J and Butter Pecan. Donuts can also be order by the half and full dozen.

To accompany the fried treats, Federal Donuts serves a proprietary coffee bean blend created in cooperation with PT’s Coffee Roasting Co. of Topeka, KS. The specific blend created by PT’s for Federal Donuts features rich, mouth-filling flavor from a customized balance of Ethiopian, Brazilian and Central American beans, roasted to perfection and brewed fresh.

Fried chicken service begins everyday at 11 a.m. and lasts until the birds are sold out. Customers can order a half chicken or six whole wings ($9) or a whole chicken or 12 whole wings ($17) served with accompanying honey glaze donuts and Japanese pickles. Inspired by Chef Solomonov’s favorite dish, Korean fried chicken, the bird is dry-cured overnight then double fried and offered two ways: Glazed, tossed with flavors such as Passionfruit Teriyaki and Dill Pickle; and Seasonings, dusted with custom blended, seasoned salts such as Federal Blend, Shabazzi and Cowboy Coffee.

Federal Donuts is co-owned by Solomonov, restaurateur Steven Cook, coffee aficionados Thomas Henneman and Bob Logue, and food-and-drink expert Felicia D’Ambrosio.

Federal Donuts on Sansom will focus on take-out business, with 10 counter seats available. They will serve seven days a week from 7 a.m. until they run out of chicken.
