February has been named Black History Month since 1976 across the nation and there is no shortage of events across Philadelphia in celebration of the great accomplishments of African American figures. Philadelphia, rich with history and culture, once again boasts a calendar full of month long celebratory events and exposes, many happening right here in Center City.

African American Museum in Philadelphia

701 Arch Street, Philadelphia

As the first institution of its kind to be erected across the US Nation, the AAMP showcases the vibrant heritage and lively culture of African Americans who enriched the lives of many races through their lives and work. Throughout the month of February the AAMP will be showcases numerous educational and exciting exhibits, such as Audacious Freedom, a recantation of the lives and contributions of Philadelphia’s African community from 1776-1876. Other exhibits include a celebration of Jack Franklin, a successful photojournalist born and died in Philadelphia; as well as a variety of workshops such as the Introduction to Black Genealogy Workshop on February 19th. National Constitution Center

Throughout the month of February the NCC will host a series of spotlights on famous and empowered African American’s, such as Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, Bessie Coleman and many others, telling the tale of their lives and the challenges they overcame. Program offered all month long and is free with  admission to the museum.

Independence Seaport Museum

Penn’s Landing, Philadelphia

The Independence Seaport Museum has partnered with the AAMP with an exhibit focused on James Forten, an abolitionist that owned and operated his own sail making company here in Philadelphia, post Revolutionary War. This exhibit is available for viewing at both museums all month long.

Penn Museum

3260 South Street, Philadelphia

“Imagine Africa” a spotlight exhibit at the Penn Museum available much longer than just the month of February, this exhibit will be on display until January 2013 at the Penn Museum. An exhibit dedicated to African history, displaying African artifacts, presenting over 50 artifacts all part of eight topics including beauty, divine and power. The Penn Museum is asking for all visitors to share their experiences and provide feedback to support the growth and permanency of this exhibit. A wonderful  history lesson and family affair exploring other cultures, anytime of year. Check out the various events offered through Imagine Africa below:
