Did you know that the Pennsylvania SPCA, located at 350 Erie Avenue, is the second humane society to be founded in the United States? Like us, you may think that all the countries SPCAs are the same and all connected, however that is incorrect. The PSPCA is special because they offer services and programs that many area shelters do not, such as:
- A humane law enforcement department that responds to situations of animal cruelty and neglect
- An animal shelter to house the animals we have rescued
- A low-cost veterinary clinic providing medical services to clients in the Philadelphia region, and
- NEW! A on-site retail store for all your essential pet products
Another profound difference with the PSPCA is that the headquarters location is open 365 days per year for adoptions. Giving every homeless animal a chance at finding their furever home. If you are looking to add to your family and would like to adopt a domestic pet, please visit the Philadelphia headquarters on Erie Ave. If you would like to view adoptable pets online prior to your visit please visit their website; however, please note that not all of their available animals may be listed and some animals listed online may not be available when you arrive at the shelter.
Please be sure to bring at least one form of identification if you intend to adopt a pet. It must include your photo and current address. You can also complete an adoption application in advance online. The PSPCA encourages you to bring your entire family, since selecting a new addition is a family affair after all. Please note that their are adoption fees when adopting a pet at the PSPCA. Their current fees are as follows:
- Kittens – $75
- Cats over 6 months – $40
- Good Samaritan Cats – $125
- Dogs over 6 months – $50
- Puppies and Good Samaritan Dogs $300
The PSPCA accepts cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, checks (with ID) and debit cards. All adoptions include spay or neuter surgery, microchip, ID tag, and vaccines (Some animals may require further sets of vaccines at adopter’s expense. Speak with your veterinarian about your pet’s appropriate vaccination schedule).
The store is open during their normal adoption hours, which are weekdays 1:00pm to 8:00pm and weekends 10:00am to 4:00pm.
If you know a pet in need of a home, that is currently homeless (stray) or unwanted, please contact the Philadelphia Animal Care and Control Team at acctphilly.org. Their office located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in North Philadelphia.
Below is a public service announcement by Phillies player, Chase Utley and his wife, Jennifer Utley reminding you how you can help stop animal cruelty.
