Established in 1988 to commemorate the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution, the Liberty Medal is awarded annually to men and women of courage and conviction who strive to secure the blessings of liberty to people around the globe. The medal was first administered by the National Constitution Center, located in Philadelphia, back in 2006, when Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Other previous recipients of the Liberty Medal include Nelson Mandela, Bono, Sandra Day O’Connor, and Jimmy Carter. Six recipients of the medal have subsequently won the Nobel Peace Prize, interestingly

The 2012 Liberty Medal Ceremony was held at the National Constitution Center on Thursday, September 13th. The 24th annual recipient of the Liberty Medal for 2012 is Muhammad Ali for his lifelong dedication as an American icon that proved that you can live the “American Dream”. Ali best known for his legendary boxing career, the Olympic gold medalist has also devoted his life to fighting for world peace. Acting as a humanitarian across the globe for equal rights, religious liberty, hunger relief, and cross-cultural understanding, Ali was recognized tonight for all his efforts since 1985.
