Spruce Street Harbor ParkYou’d be hard up to find someone who doesn’t enjoy the calmness of rocking gently between two trees in the centuries-old snoozing sling we know as the hammock.

History shows that the hammock has a rich history, dating back to the Mayan day when they would craft them out of tree bark and plant fibers. These hanging beds offered protections from the dirty ground, as well as poisonous and dangerous creatures. Not to mention, that the swinging motion of the hammock synchronizes brain waves, allowing people to doze off faster and attain a deeper state of sleep.

Philadelphians are invited to celebrate the hammock and its rich history on Wednesday, July 22 at Spruce Street Harbor Park from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. While there they can relax in the Hayneedle Hammock Lounge featuring all new hammocks, enjoy music spun by DJ Patty Pat, eat food by Garces GroupFederal Donuts and Franklin Fountain, and sip on some of delicious craft beers (or sodas for the little ones) including the very last keg of Yards Brewing Company’s Lazy Hammock IPA, brewed specially for the park.

To add to the fun, visitors can even try their hand at winning prizes — like a Hayneedle Hammock — for the best hammock photos by tagging themselves on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter hammock photos with @hayneedle and use the hashtags #SSHP and #hayneedle. Winners will be chosen on Thursday, July 23.
