People say it “takes a village” to raise a child. Well, if you ask me it also takes a village to build and run a successful family-owned business. Something that Buddy “Cake Boss” Valastro and his family – who own and operate Carlo’s Bakery, soon to be expanding into Philly – know something about.

Carlo’s Bakery, which has been featured on TLC’s hit show Cake Boss, is an Italian American family-owned business based in Hoboken, New Jersey, and acquired by the Valastro family in the 1960’s. It was originally acquired by Bartolo Valastro Sr. and over the years has been passed down to his wife, Mary Valastro, and her children Grace, Maddalena, Mary, Lisa and master baker Bartolo Jr. “Buddy” Valastro.

The bakery specializes in an array of desserts. You can get specialty cakes, wedding cakes, cannolis, pound cakes, crumb cakes and anything else your sweet tooth may desire. They even have something called the lobster tail – which I haven’t tried yet, but will soon – that is a flaky puffed pastry filled with a decadent French cream and a touch of Bailey’s Irish Cream.

The best part about Carlo’s Bakery is that it’s coming to Philly in March! The delicious sweet shop will be located right downtown at 2101 Walnut Street near Rittenhouse Square.

In addition to the flagship store in Hoboken, the family owns bakeries in Marlton, Morristown, Red Bank, Ridgewood and Westfield. Valastro also has shops in Times Square and at the Venetian in Las Vegas. They are also working on opening a location at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut and solidifying a partnership with Norwegian Cruise Line to outfit ships.
